Claude Sonnet 5

Anthropic's mid-tier workhorse — the best balance of speed and intelligence, and a drop-in replacement for Claude Sonnet 4.6 at a lower price. The practical default for production workloads.

Context window
1,000,000 tokens 1M tokens is both the default and the maximum — there is no smaller context variant. Up to 128k output, or 300k on the Batch API with the output-300k beta header. Uses the newer tokenizer: the same input text produces roughly 30% more tokens than on Sonnet 4.6, so cost does not fall in direct proportion to the lower per-token price.

Strengths

  • Best combination of speed and intelligence in the Claude lineup
  • A capability upgrade over Sonnet 4.6 at a lower price ($2/$10 per MTok), with the largest gains in coding and agentic tasks
  • Adds the browser use tool and the 2026-08-01 computer-use toolset, neither of which Sonnet 4.6 supports
  • Fills the gap between Sonnet 4.6 and Opus-class models without Opus pricing

Weaknesses

  • Setting `temperature`, `top_p`, or `top_k` to a non-default value returns a 400 error
  • Manual extended thinking and assistant-message prefill both return 400 errors
  • New tokenizer inflates token counts ~30% versus Sonnet 4.6
  • May refuse requests involving prohibited or high-risk cybersecurity topics
  • Closed weights — cannot be self-hosted
